A new dimension will be added to the gaming console industry with upgradation of XBox consoles to Dolby systems. Until now, no consoles including Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo offer Dolby standard quality features. However, from May 14 onwards it will change as Xbox will roll out its Dolby supported systems for the gamers.
Microsoft recently announced that they would provide upgrade to its X series and S series platforms to integrate Dolby Vision and Atmos so that gamers could enrich their experience.
Currently, XBox provides gamers to use HDR in standard HDR 10 which is not as versatile as Dolby system. However, Playstation also has similar standard HDR system.
With upgradation of XBox to Dolby Vision system, Xbox gamers will have more enriched experience. The gamers will be able to experience brighter highlights, sharper contrasts as well as much more vibrant colors when gamers use Vision compatible TV sets. This features will be give more clarity in both light as well as dark scenes.
These features will enable the consoles to provide brighter and richer black levels than other consoles. It will also provide 12 bit color depth. According to Microsoft, this upgradation will allow the users to improve their display quality automatically and it will remove the requirement of properly setting the display qualities of TVs.
Currently, the testing will be based on the gamers who are part of XBox insider's "Alpha Ring" group. Therefore, the number of testers are limited to a very low number as the number of X series and S series consoles produced are also limited. The current Dolby system tests are conducted for TVs with 60Hz refresh rate. However, Dolby is working with TV companies to develop Vision compatible TVs with 120 Hz refresh rate. However, certain deadlocks remain in this attempt to bring Dolby Vision technology in XBox. Firstly, there are very limited testing or trial occurring due to limited number of testers with X series and S series consoles. Moreover, the testers requires to have TVs which are 4K and Dolby Vision compatible. Recently, Microsoft brought Console Purchase Pilot Program for its users in XBox insider program to obtain X series or S series consoles.
Moreover, many TV manufacturers do not provide Dolby enabled systems as the largest manufacturer of TVs, Samsung has no TVs which are Dolby Vision compatible. Lets hope that Dolby brings gaming industry to a new height with its features.
